Welcome to my Web Site

I am a Family Law lawyer practising in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, my nation’s capital. I did not put my picture on this page because you probably do not care what I look like and you would spend precious time downloading my smiling face. If you really want to see my advertising picture (circa 1992) click here to see My Face. To see what I looked like in 2003, Click Here for a picture of me and Ottawa Senator Jason Spezza. I, of course, have not changed much since then.

If you want to know my birthday and what I’ve been doing since starting my practice of Law in 1977 then click on “About Lawrence S. Pascoe”. I can tell you that 75% of my practice consists of Family Law. As I have been practicing law for a long time now, I have built up a practice where I can be selective of what matrimonial files I will take on. Therefore, when a prospective client calls for an appointment I, or my staff, have an intake form to ensure that I am the appropriate lawyer for the case and that I want to take that case. I am trying to take on less court work for a variety of reasons. After more than 30 years of practicing Family Law, I have realized that the court system, though necessary in some cases, is not the best way to resolve matrimonial disputes. That process is much to arbitrary and depends too often on what Judge is deciding the case. I believe a matrimonial dispute will be resolved more fairly and less costly with collaborative negotiations rather than the court advocacy process. I find Family Law litigation too expensive for clients. I also believe that court work for Family Law is a specialty left to the lawyers who specialize in going to court on Family Law matters. Therefore, I ask my clients to acknowledge that if the matter cannot be settled and a court action must be initiated that, depending on the nature of the case, my clients, with my help, will obtain a family law litigation lawyer to handle the court action. It is like going to the doctor speciatlist after the general practitioner can not resolve the problem. And the fact that I am doing less court work allows me to concentrate on the skills to obtain a settlement and draft comprehensive agreements. To keep my sanity, for the other 25% of my time, I prepare wills, powers of attorney and the legal work for administering estates. So if you are caught drinking and driving do not call me, though for ongoing clients, I do help them find appropriate lawyers for legal work that I do not do. To find out how best and when to contact me click on Contact Information. To find out how to get to my office and how long it will take you, find a map at Google Maps.

I like to write a lot for non-lawyers. Many of my articles appeared in the local weekly newspaper, the Nepean Clarion. It seemed when the paper ran out of ads, it printed my articles. I have packaged them, plus many many more articles (many of a practical and process nature), forms, checklists, questionnaires and information about fees in my Family Law Packet, Wills and Powers of Attorney Packet and Administration of Estates Packet. To download or read these legal information packets and to find out what they contain, please click on Legal Information. They are available in PDF format. I also have a number of other articles that appear in my Clients' Manuals. My clients obtain my Wills and Powers of Attorney Manual, my Family Client Manual or my Administration of Estates Manual. Click on Articles to read some of my other articles I have made available on my Web site. I also have made available papers I have written for legal conferences that though written for lawyers, may be of interest to you.

If you want information about my ridiculously low fees (though I admit even I could not afford to get divorced) then click on Fees. I really encourage client and prospective client feedback. To obtain that information, I have some short surveys. To get people to fill out those surveys (which is like pulling teeth), I have a survey contest with prizes. To find out more about those surveys and the contest please click on Survey Contest.

To learn about my commitment to innovative and client-oriented legal services, click on Service Principles where I explain how I am creating long term relationships with my clients which includes some free follow up services.

If you think watching television shows about lawyers qualifies you to be a lawyer, why not try my Legal Quiz. You can check how you scored and get an explanation of the answers. Television, in my opinion, does not do a good job of educating the public about the law and lawyers. Television does get two things right about lawyers. Firstly, law partners fight with each other a lot (lawyers are not communal people). Secondly, it takes a long time to get an appeal heard, even though it seems on the same television show it only takes a few days or a week to have the initial trial.

My site contains links to topics of interest to me, such as my sister's site, my personal trainer's site, and my sports teams' sites. Click on Resources to see a few listings.

In my Forms section I have a number of forms that are found in my packets in an electronic form. Therefore, you can fill them out directly on your computer and either print them out or e-mail them directly to me prior to an appointment. The forms are available in PDF format.

As my site is quite large — there are 65 pieces of information in over 200 pages — I have an Index and Information Updates section (in alphabetical order) to help you find a particular subject. I have also noted beside it the last date it was changed.

I have a News and Views section where I had hoped to periodically set out a legal story in the news and my views on it but, I admit, I have not kept up with it, thought I hope to get back at it.

Thanks for visiting. I hope to continually expand and improve my site. I would like to know just who you are and what you think of my site. I would therefore greatly appreciate it if you would send me your comments by email to lspascoe at thepascoedifference.com .
